What is deadly force?
Any force that is likely to cause death or serious injury.
What is non-deadly force?
Any level of force other than deadly force.
What are the three types of self-defense?
A. Individual
B. Unit
C. National
What is individual self-defense?
Use of force to defend oneself or others from the imminent threat of physical injury.
What is Unit self defense?
Act of defending a particular unit of US military forces or law enforcement agency assets from imminent danger.
Information on guiding principles.
Only that force reasonably necessary under the circumstances may be used.
Excessive force may never be used; however, nothing in the application of the Coast Guard Use of Force Policy shall be construed as to require personnel to meet force with equal or lesser force.
What is policy on retreating and disengaging?
Units and personnel do not have a duty to retreat to avoid LE situations justifying the use of force, including deadly force.
What is policy on Warning Shots?
Only authorized as a signal for a vessel to heave-to and are prohibited in the context of Use of Force against persons, including crowd control.
What use of force can be used on Lawful Arrest or Prevention of Escape?
Deadly force may be used to effect a lawful arrest or prevent an escape of a person in custody when:
A. Probable cause the suspect has committed a felony involving the use or threatened use of deadly force.
B. The suspect is armed, or otherwise poses an imminent threat of death or serious physical injury to any person.
C. The suspect has failed to obey an order to halt( such order shall be given when it is feasible to do so and would not increase the danger to the officer or others)
What are the three levels of force I will use in coast Guard?
Level 1- officer presence
Level 2- verbal commands
Level 6- deadly force
What is officer presence?
Appearance, demeanor, and verbal and non-verbal communication that create an atmosphere of compliance.
Chambering of a round is an authorized warning signal.
Shotgun can be shouldered for firing only if: deadly force is authorized or there is reasonable possibility that the use of deadly force may be required.
What is verbal commands?
Form of task direction with consequences aimed at the subject.
