What is kosher?

A

term for food that is ritually acceptable
kosher: mammals with split hooves (beef and lamb), seafood with fins and scales, chicken and turkey, duck and goose, must be properly slaughtered by being soaked and salted to remove blood
not kosher: pork and rabbit, certain birds, meat and dairy together, shellfish, and catfish

What are the branches of judaism?

A
  • reform -> chill, allow female rabbis, dont typically follow dietary laws, flexiable, encourages interfaith dialouge, reject idea of messiah
  • orthodox -> reaction to reform jews, resist change, very traditional, yarmulke, believe in literal messiah
  • Conservative -> middle ground between reform and orthodox
  • Reconstructionist -> don’t believe in the supernatural, incorate jewish laws + traditions into their lives
