Types of Jurisdiction:
- Original
- Appellate
- Exclusive
- Concurrent
Original Jurisdiction:
The right to hear case for the FIRST TIME
Jurisdictional Levels:
- Federal
- State
- Local
Appellate Jurisdiction:
Right to hear a case on appeal; law has been applied unfairly or correctly
Exclusive Jurisdiction:
Assigned by Constitution;
ONLY FEDERAL COURTS CAN HEAR
(National Laws or anything related to the federal or other forms of government)
Concurrent Jurisdiction:
Cases that can be decided in state or federal courts

What is STATUTORY Law?
(Statutes) Laws that are written by state legislatures and other law making bodies
What is COMMON Law?
Origin of Stare Decisis; Past rulings that are used to make decision (precedent)
What does Stare Decisis mean?
“Let the decision stand”
