It means creation out of nothing
Give a quote from the bible that questions the idea that god created the earth?
In the beginning god created the heavens and the earth. the earth was without form and void and darkness was the face of the deep. And the spirit of god was hovering over the face of the waters and god said let there be light and there was light.
Why might the book of Genesis be hard to follow?
It may be hard to follow because it is ambiguous and unclear.
what does genesis 1:1–3 suggest?
it suggest the idea that god didn’t really create nothing out of nothing he created the world from chaos. suggesting a reality before god making the world out of nothingness.
What do christians and jews believe?
Christians and Jews follow St augustines teachings and believe that god created everything out of nothing
What is said about the creation stories?
to counter the views put forward in other creation stories by other cultures. The book of Genesis rejects the idea that god is just a local deity.
To show the power of God God is portrayed as omnipotent he can create anything he wants just by word of the mouth and nothing can compare to him everything in the universe is subject to god
There is also a message of faith that comes secondary to the purpose of showing god’s saving role in history.
Explain the implication to science?
Many scientists believe that matter most have existed in some form for eternity because they believe that matter can’t just come out of nowhere god use formless but already existent matter to create the world

creation ex nihilo make god responsible for everything such as evil and diseases which makes us question his intentions the idea that god didn’t create out of nothing undermines the cosmological argument for the existence of god.

God is depicted anthropomorphically ‘he is walking in the garden’

both are responsible for the existence of the universe
both are described as the reason the universe exists

what are the differences between the prime mover and the god of the bible?
.one is affected by people’s behaviour and the other is unaffected as it only thinks of itself and is completely unaware of the world around it
.one is omnipotent omniscient and omnibenevolent whereas the prime mover isn’t because he only thinks of himself
.prime mover is immaterial whereas in genesis he acts like he has a body speaks etc
.God fashions things like a craftsman whereas the prime mover causes movement by attracting things towards itself and remaining unaffected
why is and isn’t god responsible for what happens?
free will - he gave it to us and he is omniscient he would of known what was going to happen and why would he create a ‘cunning’ creature to tempt us to this fate
although we humans have a choice to not make the wrong decisions so its Adam and eve’s fault that they didn’t listen

How is God’s goodness shown through creation?
The creation of the world was an act of love everything god made was ‘very good’

giving commandments is seen as an act of love and concern for humanity
