Design argument Flashcards
what is the design argument?
The design argument is the attempt to prove God’s existence through the concept of design. These argument are inductive and posteriori.
What pattern does the design argument follow?
- the world contains order, regularity, purpose and beauty
- an object with order, regularity, purpose and beauty does not arise by chance it must have been designed by a designer (God)
What did aquinas say about nature?
He said that nature has an order and a purpose to it. and all natural occurrences show evidence of design.
What does Aquinas say about inanimate objects/
he suggested that nothing inanimate is purposeful without the aid of a ‘guiding hand’
he uses the idea of an archer shooting an arrow at a target. Therefore everything in nature which is moving and has no intelligence must be directed to its goal by God.
Give another example from aquinas?
He also adds that inanimate object such as the planets would not have ordered themselves the way they have because they have no intelligence therefor they must have been directed by a being with intelligence - God
