Write abot the importance of synagougue
- A place where jews can take place ina wide range of activities, and also a place of prayer
Write about the Ark
- The Ark ( Aron Hakodesh )
- Cabinet / container where torah scrolls are kept
- its at the front , and is facing jerusalem,
- its the holiest place in the synagogue
- Symbolises the first Ark of the covenant
Write about the ever burning light
- The ever burning light ( NerTamid )
- placed slightly above ever burning light
- Symbolises Gods prescence, so never put out
Write about the reading platform
- The reading platform ( bimah )
- Where the torah is read from
- focal point where its read from, whole congregation can see / watch
Write about Orthodox judaism / Services
- very traditional , strictly follow rule of torah
- believe Men and woman should have different roles in the church
- service in hebrew, men and woman sit seperate, men always cover their heads
Write about Reform judaism / Services
- They believe torah was written by humans but inspired by God
- Believe Men and Woman should be able to undertake the same roles
- Service is held in English, Men and Woman sit together
Write about daily services and prayer
Talit - A prayer shawl made from wool or silk, it reminds Jews they are obeying Gods rules whn they wear it
Tefillin - A pair of small leather boxes containing extracts from the torah, fastened to the centre of forhead and above left arm
Shabbat in the synagougue
Shabbat is - a time to celebrate Gods creation, a time to relax and rest, worship God and enjoy family life, a gift from God of a day of rest and renewal
Shabbat at home
- No work can be done on this day, everuthing needs to be done on the day before, you need two candles, two pieces of bread and wine on the table
Worship in the home
- pray 3 times in a day
- The tenakh ( written law, a collection of 24 books ) and Talmud ( oral law, contains ways to interpret the torah and applly it to every day life ) teach Jews how to obey Gods Laws
Birth Ceromonies
Naming Ceromeney :
- Father recites torah blessing, asking god for good health
- Girl named then, boys named at circumcition
Brit Mikah :
- When boy is 8 days old he is circumcised ( foreskin is removed ), sign of covenant between Abraham and God
- Celebrations take place afterwards
Redemption of the first born :

Bar and bat mitzvah
- it significant because :
When Jew is seen as an adult
Bring you closer to god / community
When you are accepted to start following Jewish la strictly - Bar Mitzvah ( boys ) is at the age of 13, become “ son of the commandment
- Bat Mitzvah ( girls ) is at the age of 12, become “ daughter of the commandment
