What is the shema?

A

An important Jewish prayer that is formed from passages in Deuteronomy and Numbers. It fully expresses the belief in the one God and how humans should respond to this belief. It starts with the following words:

“Hear, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord alone. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.” (Deuteronomy 6:4-5)

A

A mitzvah is a Jewish rule or commandment. There are 613 mitzvot in the Torah.
The mitzvot give guidance to Jews on how to use their free will correctly, to live in a way that pleases God.

Tell Jews how to improve their relationship with other people. This is important because the Torah teaches that Jews should show love towards other people and by doing this, Jews are showing their love for God.

A

The good will enter paradise.
Those who follow their faith properly will be judged good enough for heaven.
Heaven will be with God.
It is not known if this is a state of consciousness, or a physical or spiritual place.

A

Today, the word ‘Messiah’ is used to refer to a future leader of the Jews.

A

In every generation, a descendent of King David is born, who is the potential Messiah.
The Messiah will bring world peace and rule with kindness and justice.
He’ll be the ultimate teacher of the Torah.
