He soaked a dressing in carbolic acid (phenol) to cover a wound and this caused the rate of infection to vastly reduce.
After discovaring carbolic acid reduces infection what else did Lister begin to do in the operating theatre?
Hand-washing, sterilising instruments and spraying carbolic in the theatre.

His work lowered infection rates in many different countries and his methods were used by a number of surgeons.
