Joints, Tendons, Muscles And Ligaments Flashcards
What do ligaments do?
Ligaments attach your bones to your bones.
What are tendons and ligaments made of?
They are made of stretchy fibres called collagen.
Why do tendons have to be stretchy?
Because when a joint is flexed, the tendon has to extend.
What are joints?
A place where two or more bones meet.
What types of joints are there?
The ball and socket, the hinge, the pivot and the fixed joints.
Where are they found?
The ball and socket is found in the shoulder or hip, the hinge in the elbow or knee, the pivot in the neck and the fixed in the skull.
Which gives the most movement, and which gives the least?
The ball and socket gives the most and the fixed gives the least.
What is a muscle?
Muscles are fibrous tissues that provide strength and motion. Without muscles, we wouldn’t be able to move.
What types of muscle are there and where are they found?
The cardiac muscle is found in the heart. The smooth muscle is found in the organs.
The skeletal muscle is attached to the skeleton.
How do muscles work?
Muscles are antagonistic. This means that they work in pairs. When one contracts, the other relaxes. When a muscle contracts, it gets shorter and fatter. When it relaxes it returns to it’s original size. Muscles pull tendons around a joint, causing your bones to move. They can only pull.
What is an anabolic steroid?
Anabolic steroids are a performance enhancing drug which you take to increase muscle mass. This enables your muscles to get bigger and stronger. However, they have side affects that may cause heart attacks and blood clots.
What do tendons do?
Tendons attach your muscles to your bones.
