Joints only Flashcards
Functional classification of joints means
amount of movement at joint: synarthrosis, amphiarathrosis, diarthrosis
Structural classification of joints means
what tissues are holding the bone together
Suture
Fibrous joints: dense fibrous CT holds together 2 cranial bones
gomphosis
Fibrous joint: dense CT, holds tooth
synchondriosis
Type of cartilaginous joint: hyaline cartilage that holds 2 bones (1st rib and sternum)
synostosis
Fibrous joint: 2 bones fuse together (sacrum)
syndesmosis
Fibrous joint: connected by ligaments of varying lengths (tibia & fibula)
symphyses
Type of cartilaginous joint: wedge of fibrous cartilage (intervertebral disc)
synovial joint
fluid filled sac
Gliding joint
wrist, ankle, vertebrae
Saddle joint
base of thumb
pivot joint
example; atlas and axis, radius and ulna
ellipsoidal joint
Occipital condyle and atlas. Base of fingers
hinge joint
elbow, knee.
ball and socket joint
hip, shoulder
articular cartilage
made of hyaline
joint cavity
filled with synovial fluid
articular capsule: outer & inner
outer: dense irreg. Inner: synovial membrane the produces synovial fluid
bursa & tendon sheath
Reduce friction, wraps around tendon
