Endocrine Flashcards
Thyroid Stimulating hormone
targets thyroid, stimulates release of thyroxine and triiothyronine
adrenocorticotrophic hormone
adrenal cortex, stimulates the release of steroid hormones
prolactin
mammary tissue, stimulates milk production
melanocyte stimulating hormone
epidermal melanocytes, promot epidermal pigement
Follicle stimulating hormone (female)
developing ovarian follicle, promotes folic maturation and estrogen secretion
Follicle stimulating hormone (male)
sertoli cells, promote maturation of spermatozoa
Luteinizing hormone (female)
mature ovarian follicle, triggers ovulation and formation of corpus luteum, stimulates release of estrogen and progesterone
Luteinizing hormone (male)
interstitial cells, stimulates secretion of testosterone
Growth hormone (m & c)
muscles and cartilage, stimulates protein synthesis & cell division for growth
Growth hormone (l & a)
liver and adipose, stimulates breakdown of fat and glycogen fuel growth
Oxytocin
Uterine myometrium (contractions), mamary glands (milk ejection)
Antidiuretic hormone
renal tubules (stimulate water reabsorption), (smooth muscles of blood vessels: vasoconstriction)
Thyroxine and triiodothyronine
Increase metabolic rate and ATP production, increase body temp in children, promote normal development
C cells: calcitonin
lowers blood calcium
parathyroid hormone
raises blood calcium, increases absorption, decrease urinary loss
Melatonin
regulates sexual maturity, circadian rhythms, free radical damage
Thymosin
maturation of lymphocytes
Adrenal cortex hormones
Glucocorticoids: fat breakdown & protein for repair
Mineralocorticoids: renal sodium reabsorption and K+ excretion
Gonadocortiocids : pubic hair, libido
Epinephrine & norephinephrine
prolong sympathetic response
glucagon and insulin
glucagon ( increase blood glucose by stimulating glycogen breakdown) insulin (decrease blood glucose by promoting glycogen storage)
Islet of langerhan
makes the insulin and glucagon in pancreas
follicle cavity w/ colloid in the thyroid makes the
thyroxine and triiodothyronine
Chronic illness b/c high glucose
retinopathy, nephropathy, peripheral neuropathy
