Joints of Upper Extremity I Flashcards
Which named joints make up the shoulder girdle?
Glenohumeral
Acromioclavicular
Sternoclavicular
Scapulothoracic articulation
How does a dislocation of the sternoclavicular joint occur?
Blow is received to the acromion of the scapula, or when a force is transmitted to the pectoral girdle during a fall on the outstretched hand, the force of the blow is usually transmitted along the length of the clavicle (i.e. along its long axis).
The clavicle may fracture near the junction of its middle and lateral thirds, but it is rare for the SC joint to dislocate.
Most dislocations of the SC joint in youths, through the epiphyseal plate because the epiphysis at the sternal end of the clavicle does not close until 23-25 yo.
Ankylosis of Sternoclavicular joint?
Ankylosis = stiffening or fixation, of the SC joint — surgically corrected by removing center of clavicle, creating a pseudojoint or “flail” joint to permit scapular movement.
Metacarpophalangeal (MCP) Joints - what type of joint? permit movement in which planes?
condyloid type of synovial joint.
permit movement in flexion-extension, adduction-abduction
Interphalangeal (IP)-what type of joint? permits movement in which planes?
hinge type of synovial joint
permits flexion-extension only
Name Ligaments of Wrist Joint.
Palmar radiocarpal ligaments (radius to 2 rows of carpals)
-so hand follows radius during supination.
Dorsal radiocarpal ligaments
-same direction so that the hand follows the radius during pronation.
Ulnar collateral ligament (ulnar styloid process & triquetrum
-strengthen joint capsule medially
Radial collateral ligament (radial styloid process & scaphoid)
-strengthen joint capsule laterally
Blood supply to wrist joint.
Branches of the dorsal and palmar carpal arches.
Blood supply/innervation of Intercarpal Joints.
-Arteries derived from dorsal and palmar carpal arches.
-anterior interosseous branch (median nerve)
+
-dorsal & deep branches (ulnar nerve)
Arterial supply & Innervation of Metacarpal & IP joints?
- superficial palmar arches => deep digital arteries
- ulnar & median nerves => digital nerves
