Joints of the pelvis and hip Flashcards
Anterior sacroiliac ligament
Attachments:
-Anterior aspect of the ilium to the sacrum
Function:
-Secures/stabilizes sacrum and pelvis
Posterior sacroiliac joint
Attachments:
-Posterior aspect of the sacrum to the edge of ilium between PSIS and PIIS
Function:
-Secures/stabilizes sacrum and pelvis
Ilio-lumbar ligament
Attachments:
-transverse process of 5th lumbar vertebrae to iliac crest - blends in with anterior sacroiliac joint
Function:
-Stabilizes the base of the vertebral column at L5 with the pelvis
Inguinal ligament
Attachments:
-ASIS to to pubic tubercle
Actions:
-Attachment site for some of the abdominal muscles
-Protects femoral artery, vein and nerves as they pass through into the thigh
Sacrotuberous ligament
Attachments:
-sacrum, coccyx and posterior aspect of the ilium to ischial tuberosity
Function:
-Transforms the sciatic notch into the large sciatic foramen
-Attachment site for pelvic muscles
Sacrospinous ligament
Attachments:
-Sacrum and coccyx to ischial spine
Function:
-Subdivides the sciatic foramen into greater and lesser sciatic foramen
-Sacrospinous and sacrotuberous ligaments help counterbalance rotation of sacroiliac joints
Iliofemoral ligament
Attachment:
-AIIS and acetabular rim to intertrochanteric line
Functions:
-Helps stabilize the femoral head, limits lateral rotation and prevents hyperextension
Pubofemoral ligament
Attachments:
-Obturator crest of pubic bone to iliofemoral ligament and capsule
Functions:
-Helps stabilize hips, prevents hyperextension, lateral rotation and excessive abduction*
Ischiofemoral ligament
Attachments:
-Ischial part of acetabular rim to neck of femur
Functions:
-Prevents hyperextension*, stabilizes the hip joint and restricts medial rotation
Traverse ligament
Attachments:
-Bridges the acetabular notch
Functions:
-Closes off the acetabular notch and blending in with the labrum, helps to stabilize the joint
