Joints of Sternum Flashcards
What structures articulate at the costovertebral joints?
Head of rib and (demi) facets of vertebrae
What structures articulate at the costotransverse joints?
Articulating surface of tubercle of rib and facet on transverse process of thoracic vertebrae
What structures articulate at the interchondral joints?
Costal costal cartilages between ribs 6&7, 7&8, 8&9, and 9&10
What structures articulate at the sternocostal joints?
Sternal-end of ribs and costal facets of sternum
What type of joint are the costovertebral, costotransverse, costochondral, interchondral, sternocostal, manubriosternal, and xiphisternal joints?
Gliding/Place (Synovial) Gliding/Place (Synovial) Synchondrosis Gliding/Plane (Synovial) Synchondrosis (Cartilagenous) for 1st rib, and gliding/plane (synovial) for ribs 2-7 Symphysis (Fibrous) Synchondrosis (Cartilagenous)
What ligaments hold the costervertebral joints?
Radiate ligaments - covering
Intra-articular ligaments of ribs 1 and 10-12 - crests of head of ribs to intervertebral discs
What ligaments hold the costotransverse joints?
Costotransverse ligament - same-leveled anterior transverse process to posterior neck of rib
Superior costotransverse ligament - neck of rib to transverse process of vertebra above
Lateral costotransverse ligament - non-articulating surface of tubercle of ribs to tip of same-leveled transverse process
What ligaments hold the interchondral joints?
Interchondral ligaments - reinforce anterior and posterior
What ligaments hold the sternocostal joints?
Anterior + posterior radiate sternocostal ligaments
Intra-articular ligaments
