Joints, Muscles, Movements Flashcards
What is lateral rotation?
The bone or limb rotates around a single long axis outwards
What joint is the hip joint?
Ball and socket
What is medial rotation?
The bone or limb rotates around a single long axis inwards
What is horizontal flexion?
Movement is parallel to the ground and towards the midline of the body
What is horizontal extension?
Movement is parallel to the ground and away from the midline of the body
What is adduction?
To bring together, movement towards the midline of the body
What is circumduction?
Flexion, extension, adduction and abduction happening together in a conical movement
What is flexion?
To bend, reducing the angle of the joint
What is extension?
To straighten, increasing the angle of the joint
What is dorsi-flexion?
Ankle and toes point towards the body
What is plantar-flexion?
Ankle and toes point away from the body
What is the role of the antagonist?
To relax and lengthen
What is the role of the agonist?
To contract and shorten
What is the muscle that causes the movement known as?
The prime mover
What does a tendon do?
Pulls on a bone to cause a movement
What is a fixator muscle?
Muscle that keeps a body part fixed in shape during a movement
What happens in the stretch-shortening cycle?
The agonist contracts and shortens and the antagonist relaxes and lengthens simultaneously to cause a movement
What type of joint is the shoulder joint?
Ball and socket
What type of joint is in the wrists?
Condyloid
What are the three types of muscle?
Smooth
Cardiac
Skeletal
What are the three stages of movement?
Preparation
Execution
Recovery
