Joints Flashcards
Classification of joints
Fibrous joints
Cartilaginous joints
Synovial joints
Synovial joint characteristics
Articular cartilage Joint capsule Joint cavity Bursae Ligaments
What does the Joint capsule do?
Keeps liquid in the joint
What is the joint cavity?
Space between the bones in a joint
Bursae
A fluid filled sac that reduces friction
What do Ligaments do?
They hold bones together so they don’t move sideways or pull apart
Ball and socket joints
Ex. The hip
Allows movement on 3 axes
Spheroidal joint
Gliding joint
Ex. Between carpels
Glide against one another
Arthrodial or plane joint
Hinge joint
Ex. Elbow
Movement in one plane, a convex part of bone fits into a concave part of another bone
Ginglymus joint
Pivot joint
Ex. Head and neck
A rounded point of one bone fits into a groove of another
Trochoid joint
Saddle joint
Ex. Thumb
Allows movement in two planes, but not smooth circular
Elipsoid joint
Ex. Wrist
Synovial joint that allows movement in two planes, but can go in smooth circular motion
Dislocation
When a bone is displaced from its joint
Separation
Ligaments in the joint are disrupted
Osteoarthritis
Loss of cartilage
