Joints Flashcards
Name the three types of joints
Fibrous
Cartilaginous
Synovial
What is a fibrous joint made of?
Dense fibrous connective tissue
High tensile strength
Little movement in adults
What is a cartilaginous joint made of?
Layer of cartilage
Not much movement but more than fibrous joints
What are the two different types of cartilaginous joints?
Synchondroses (primary)
Symphyses (secondary)
What is an example of a synchondroses joint?
Epiphyseal growth plate
What is an example of a symphyses joint?
Intervertebral disc
Give examples of fibrous joints
Cranial sutures Interosseus membranes (e.g. between ulnar and radius)
What is a synovial joint?
It has a fibrous capsule surrounding it with a synovial cavity in between the bones. The end of each bone has articular cartilage on it.
It has the greatest movement of the 3 types of joints.
Name the different types of synovial joints and give an example of each.
Hinge- elbow joint Pivot- dens-atlas joint Saddle- thumb joint Condylar (ellipsoid)- finger joint Plane joint- facet joint in vertebra Ball and socket- shoulder joint
