Joints Flashcards
Ball and socket joints
Joint that gives the greatest amount of movement in all anatomical planes; hips and shoulders
Saddle joint
Resembles the saddle of a horse. Notably the thumb between metacarpal and carpal.
Condyloid joints
2 bones with either convex or concave shape fit together oddly
Pivot joints
Where one bone rotates along another, like the atlas on top of the axis. The Atlas rotates on the deans of C2
Hinge joint
One plane, like elbow or knee
Gliding / Planar joints
Allow movement only along 1 plane, example is the carpal / wrist and between tarsals/ankle
Synovial joint
Freely moving joints. Joint that has a synovial membrane in the innermost capsule of the synovial cavity, creating synovial fluid to contribute to joint mobility and for cartilaginous disc health
Cartilaginous joints
Cartladge junction of the joint with limited movement : pelvis, ribs and vertebral bodies
Fibrous joints
Have no observable movement - similar to that of the joints in the skull itself
