Joints Flashcards
What are joints?
The site where two skeletal components/elements come together
What are the two main types of joints?
Synovial joints and solid joints
What is a synovial joint
A type of joint that is separated by an articular cavity
What is a solid joint
A type of joint that is connected with a connective tissue
What are the characteristics of synovial joints
- Has a layer of cartilage (hyaline cartilage)
- Has a joint capsule consisting of synovial membrane and fibrous membrane
- Usually has other components as well such as, articular disks, fat pads, and tendons
What are synovial membranes
Synovial membrane is a connective tissue that lines the inner articular cavity
Can synovial membranes form outside of joints? What is it for?
Yes, outside of joints, synovial membranes are known as tendon sheath or tendon bursae in which it intervenes between structures reducing friction
What are fibrous membranes?
Fibrous membranes surrounds and stabilizes the articular cavity and is formed by dense connective tissue
What are the type of synovial joints?
- Plane joints or gliding joints
- Hinge joints
- Pivot joints
- Bicondylar joints
- Condylar joints
- Saddle joints
- Ball and socket joints
What are the function of each joints
- Plane joints provides gliding movement
- Hinge joints provide movement in one axis
- Pivot joints enable rotational movement
- Bicondylar joints allows movement mostly in one axis while movement on the other axis is limited
- Condylar joints allows movement in two axis at right angles
- Saddle joints allows movement in two axis at right angles and have a saddle shape
- Ball and socket joints allows movement ion multiple axis
What are solid joints
Solid joints are a type of joint that are connected by a connective tissue, mainly fibrous connective tissue or cartilages
What are the two type of solid joints
- Fibrous joints
- Cartilages joints
What are the type of fibrous joints?
- Sutures (In the skull, connects the skull with fibrous connective tissue also known as sutural ligament)
- Gomphosis (Between teeth and adjacent bones also known as periodontal ligament
- Syndesmosis (Two bones linked by a ligament)
What are the type of cartilages joints?
- Synchondrosis (Occurs when two ossification centers are separated)
- Symphysis (Occur where two separate bones are connected by a cartilage)
