Cartilage Flashcards
What are cartilages?
An avascular connective tissue consisting of extracellular fibers embedded in a matrix containing localized cells
What are the function of cartilages?
- To support soft tissues
- To provide a smooth surface for bones to glide in
- Enable the development and growth of long bones
What are the type of cartilages?
- Hyaline
- Elastic
- Fibrocartilage
What is the function and characteristics of hyaline cartilages?
Hyaline cartilages has moderate amount of collagen fibers and it serves as a smooth gliding surface for bones.
What is the function of elastic cartilages?
Elastic cartilages has substantial amount of elastic fibers and little collagen. Elastic fibers support part of our bodies that needs to bend (e.g. the ear)
What is the characteristic and function of fibrocartilages?
Fibrocartilages have substantial amount of collagen fibers and limited cells. Fibrocartilages as a cushion within joints, where it helps manage compression forces and reduces stress placed on joints.
Where can we find hyaline cartilages?
We can mainly find hyaline cartilages in synovial joint, specifically the articular surfaces
Where can we find elastic cartilages?
Elastic cartilages forms the external ears, auditory tubes, and the epiglottis
Where can we find fibrocartilages?
We can mainly find fibrocartilages in the intervertebral discs
