-used to form box shapes
-interlocking fingers reinforced with glue
-made using a jig
-strong and aesthetically pleasing

-high level of skill
-strength, AESTHETICS
-ideal for cabinets, cuboards, drawers
-dovetail shape means HIGH DIRECTIONAL STRENGTH

-channel cut through one piece which houses second perpendicular piece
-easy to make
-glue can be added or not (create sliding pieces)
-commonly used for shelves and divides

-VERSATILE and easy to construct
-quick and easy
-not particularly strong
-can be reinforced with bolts, screws, glue
Properties of a dowel joint
-quick, simple, effective
-used in flat pack furniture
-cost effective alternative to mortise and tenon joints
Properties of mortise and tenon joint
-HEAVY DUTY joint
-used in load bearing timber frameworks
-high shear strength
-can be glued or pinned in place
