Joint Types Flashcards
Fibrous Joints
Very stable, least mobile
- Sutures (scalp)
- Syndesmosis (e.g. interosseous membrane),
- Gomphosis (teeth)
Cartilaginous
Midway between stability and movement
- Primary cartilaginous: Ephiphysis
- Secondary cartilaginous: Pubic symphysis, IV discs (MIDLINE STRUCTURES)
Synovial Joints - Name 6
Plane, hinge, condyloid, saddle, ball and socket, pivot
Plane joint
Intertarsal/carpal joints
Gliding and sliding movements
Pivot joint
Atlanto-axial joint
Ball and socket joint
Glenohumeral joint
Saddle joint
Carpometacarpal joint
Hinge joint
Knee
Condyloid joint
Metacarpal-phalangeal joint
Components of a synovial joint
Fibrous capsule, synovial membrane (formed from synovial cells which secrete synovial fluid), joint space, hyaline/articular cartilage
Functions of synovial fluid
Phagocytosis Lubrication --> Achieved through GAGs Antimicrobial Nutrition Transportation Shock absorption
What are bursa?
A thin synovial membrane filled with fluid. Acts to reduce frictional forces between bones and surrounding soft tissues.
What are tenosynovium?
A double layer of synovial membrane which surrounds tendons as they change direction. A thin layer of synovial fluid is found inbetween acting to reduce friction and improve gliding.
Subject to wear due to repetitive forces
