Joint Classifications Flashcards
1
Q
what are the 3 types of joints
A
fibrous (fixed)
cartilaginous (slightly movable)
synovial (freely movable)
2
Q
characteristics of fibrous joints
A
- held together by only a ligament
- e.g. flat bones in cranium, teeth
3
Q
characteristics of cartilaginous joints
A
- where bones are joint together by cartilage
- slightly movable
(vertebrae)
4
Q
characteristics of synovial joints
A
- most common joint classification in skeleton
- highly movable (mostly in appendicular skeleton)
- synovial capsule surrounds joint to enclose synovial fluid
- synovial membrane secretes synovial fluid (lubricant)
- hyaline/articulating cartilage at the end of bones
5
Q
function of bursa
A
fluid filled sac that sits between joint capsule and muscle to lift muscle away from joint capsule to prevent friction during a muscle contraction
6
Q
what are the 6 types of synovial joints
A
- ball & socket (shoulder, hip)
- hinge (elbow, knee)
- pivot (neck joints (top of vertebrae))
- condyloid (wrist)
- saddle (in the hand)
- gliding (in the hand)
