Joint Arthrokinematics Flashcards
what are the 3 fundamental arthrokinematic movements
roll
slide
spin
describe the arthrokinematics of a convex-on concave movement
roll and slide motion move in opposite directions.
ex. glenohumeral joint: humerus on glenoid
superior roll of the humeral head with inferior slide
describe the arthrokinematics of a concave-on concex movement
roll and slide move in the same direction
ex. tibial on femoral
tibial surface rolls and glides in the same direction
what would happen if only rotation (rolling) happened during joint movement
it would not stay in the joint cavity and could impinge the joint, crushing bursaes or nerves
What would happen if only a glide occurred during joint movement?
bone would scrape against bone, and could result in separation of the joint
what tissues initiate, guide, and terminate arthrokinematics
Muscles initiate the action
ligaments guide
bone or soft tissue, and passive muscle tension terminates
what is accessory movement in a joint
passive movement that happens to occur with primary movement
describe amount of accessory movement available for a joint in an open packed vs a closed packed position
open packed: allows mobility in the joint and allows accessory movement
close packed: very stable, and does not allow for accessory movment
what is the definition of a capsular pattern
the pattern of limitation in ROM when there is inflammation in the synovial joints
