Joint action Flashcards
Flexion is what?
adjacent bones move together decreasing the angle between them.
Extension is what?
Adjacent bones move apart increasing the angle between them. Example Straightening of the elbow during an overhead tricep extension.
Define Abduction?
Arms and Legs move laterally away from the midline of the body. eg: Side lying upper leg lift.
Define Adduction?
A body segments movement towards the midline. eg: Squeezing a stability ball between knees.
Define Rotation?
A body parts movement along its own long axis along the transverse plane. eg: Looking over your shoulder.
Define Circumduction?
A body parts movement along a full circular path, involving flexion, abduction, extension and adduction sequentially.
Define Lateral Flexion?
Head or Torso bends to the side.
Define Hyperextension?
A movement that extends beyond anatomical position.
Dorsiflexion
The top of the foot moves towards the shin.
Plantarflexion
The top of the foot moves away from the shin.
Inversion
The sole of the foot faces inward.
Eversion
The sole of the foot faces outward.
Horizontal Abduction
Movement of a limb away from the midline. eg: Reverse flys.
Horizontal Adduction
Movement of a limb toward the midline along the transverse plane.
Elevation
Shrugging of the shoulders.
