Q

What challenges do you expect in working as a school counselor?

A

I expect challenges with large workloads, and being unable to provide students with the mental health resources they seek or need.

17
Q

How would you help a student who struggles to make friends at school?

A

I would help the student by building their confidence, teaching social skills, connecting them with peers who share similar interests, and providing opportunities for social interaction and friendship-building.”

18
Q

What is your general attitude toward disciplining students?

A

My general attitude toward disciplining students is to be fair, consistent, and focused on teaching positive behavior.

19
Q

How would you help a consistently disruptive student and what protocol would you follow in disciplining them?

A

“If a student was being repeatedly disruptive in class or other school situations, I would first work with the student to explain the negative effect of their actions and identify the cause of this problem. Behavioral issues are often caused by underlying situational or emotional challenges. If this was the case, I would recommend that the student seek appropriate psychological care and communicate effectively with their parents.”

20
Q

What would you do if an at-risk student’s parents or family members didn’t respond to your communication?

A

“If a student’s family didn’t respond to my repeated communication, it would raise concern for me, since parents are supposed to be the champions of their children’s education and care. I would heighten my approach in communicating with them by involving school leaders who may be able to get in contact. From there, I would work with family members to understand what supports they need to support their student.”

21
Q

How would you handle the dual responsibilities of meeting immediate student needs and completing the necessary documentation?

A

In my experience, the most important part of being a school counselor is helping students succeed. While this means I must meet their immediate needs, I also think documenting meetings, intervention plans and parent communications is a key part of keeping track of their needs. Because of this, I try to complete paperwork simultaneously as I move through my care duties. I believe this strategy helps me provide more accurate and effective care for students overall.”

22
Q

What experiences do you have in working with students with IEPs?

A
23
Q

If a student told you they wanted to drop out of school, what would you do?

A

“If a student confided in me that they wanted to drop out of school, I would first ask them for their reasoning. This would help me identify the challenges they’re experiencing and find ways to support them in overcoming obstacles in completing their education. From here, I would encourage the student to continue their studies and establish support mechanisms to help them succeed.”

24
Q

How do you handle criticism?

A

I think receiving feedback gives me the valuable opportunity to grow as a school counselor. If I received criticism about my work from a peer, supervisor or parent, I would make sure to take this feedback seriously and try to evaluate my practices to better meet the needs of all school stakeholders.”

25
Q

What is your experience working with students from diverse ethic and socioeconomic backgrounds?

A

Students from diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds may have particular needs and sometimes require specialized support due to the societal pressures they face. In my current job, I work with many diverse students who require specialized support. I was able to provide that support and help them understand what they needed to accomplish.
