Jihad is said to mean a holy war waged on behalf of Islam as a religious duty or a personal struggle in devotion to Islam especially involving spiritual discipline. There are different forms of Jihad. One where you deal with a mental and personal struggle and one which is much more violent like war, or acts of terrorism.

This happens because when people commit terrorism they say that they are dying for their religion and it is said if you die for Allah or Islam then you will go straight to paradise so a lot of terrorist attacks done by people like ISIS are done as and act for their religion.
