JFK background
born in 1917 to Joseph Kennedy, a Boston millionaire of Irish descent, and wife Rose. He was one of 9 children.
JFK time in Navy
took command of PT-109 in 1942. In August, the patrol boat collided with a Japanese destroyer, and two of his men were killed instantly while the rest were injured, including Kennedy. Kennedy towed crewman to island with life jacket strap clenched between his teeth. Awarded Navy and Marine Corps Medal and Purple Heart Medal.
