8
Q

What does the “balance” pairing of Luke 7:1-10 and Luke 7:11-17 entail?

A

1-10:
- Powerful centurion, man, Gentile, friend to the nation

11-17:
- powerless widow, woman, Jew, no friends (no one to take care of her as she’s a widow who lost her only son)

  • with these pairings, the whole world is described 4 times: powerful = powerless = the whole world; man + woman = whole world; Gentile + Jew = whole world; friends of all + no friends = whole world

How did the women specifically support the ministry of Jesus?

What does that mean for us?

A
  • Jews, meaning they gave a tithe
  • Missions contribution as these “13” were entire scope of world missions at the time!
  • We need to have the same generous heart for special missions
  • Leaders give the most because we believe in the mission the most!!

- Luke 12:51-53
- Luke 14:25-27

30
Q

Luke 14:26

A

“Whoever does not hate…” => Why?
- people closest to use have biggest influence, therefore they have the greatest sway in our convictions
- God needs to have the biggest influence on us

31
Q

What happens if you don’t put the spiritual family above the physical family?

A

You will eventually fall away

32
Q

Luke 8:40-56

A

Balance:
- 12 yr old girl entering prime of her life – almost marrying age (girl represents children)
- woman bleeding for 12 years was at end of her life (represents adults)
- children + adults = HUMANITY
- Luke ‘borrowed’ this account from Mark

33

How does the Women’s Elevation open and close?

A

Open:
- account of Jesus raising from the dead the “only son” of a “powerless woman” (Luke 7:11-18)

Close:
- account of raising from the dead “only daughter” of “powerful (synagogue ruler) man.” (Luke 8:40-42, 49-56)

39
Q

Two foundational teachings:

A
  1. Anybody can change
  2. Jesus’ good news is for the whole world!
  • not even death can stop our Savior!
  • through connecting Jesus’ teachings and miracle accounts with “balances”, Luke continually challenges us to reach the whole world!!
  • this is one of the reasons why Luke isn’t written chronologically
