Jesus' Revolutionary Elevation of Women Flashcards
When did Luke write Luke and Acts?
During Paul’s imprisonments:
Caesarea (57-59AD) and Rome (60-62AD)
What does Paul consider Luke?
Doctor and Gentile (Colossians 4:10-14)
Why was Timothy circumsiced?
To go into synagogues and reach Jews (Acts 16:3)
What was the proper order of the spreading of the gospel?
First to the Jews, then to the Gentiles (Romans 1:16)
What’s the hypothesis about Luke?
- Traveled with Paul during his missionary journeys, therefore he’s a “Gentile convert to Judaism” when met in Troas
- allows him to be with Paul preaching to Jews and Gentiles (Acts 6:5)
What are the three proofs used to support the hypothesis of Luke being a “Gentile convert to Judaism” so that he could preach with Paul?
- Luke’s masterful use of the OT
- Luke’s detailed passage on the temple in Luke 1
- Luke’s focus on the temple and Jerusalem throughout the book.
What’s the literary device used by Luke in his writings?
“Balance”
- Ex. Jew/Gentile, man/woman
- Luke 7:1-10 paired with Luke 1:11-17
What does the “balance” pairing of Luke 7:1-10 and Luke 7:11-17 entail?
1-10:
- Powerful centurion, man, Gentile, friend to the nation
11-17:
- powerless widow, woman, Jew, no friends (no one to take care of her as she’s a widow who lost her only son)
- with these pairings, the whole world is described 4 times: powerful = powerless = the whole world; man + woman = whole world; Gentile + Jew = whole world; friends of all + no friends = whole world
The “Journey Section”
Luke 9:51-19:44

Jesus’ reaction towards the lady who lost her son:
- heart went out to her since there was no husband/son to protect/provide for her
- Jesus told dead man to get up
Crowd reaction to miracle:
Jesus called a “great prophet” because He raised the dead as did the “previous great prophets:”
- Elijah - 1 Kings 17
- Elisha - 2 Kings 4
Luke 7:18-23
John the Baptist doubts Jesus
- in danger of falling away
- wasn’t the Jesus that John expected
- Jesus has two witnesses report “what they see and hear” (Luke 7:22)
