A paralysed man was bought to Jesus and he saw the faith in the man and the men who had bought him. Jesus forgave the man for his sins but the scribes said this was blasphemy as only God could forgive sins. Jesus asked ‘which is easier, to say “your sins are forgiven” or to say “get up, take your mat and walk”?’ The man then God up and walked, proving Jesus have authority to forgive sins
What was the Jewish ruling about the sabbath?
It was meant to be kept holy so no work was meant to be done
What happened in the story of picking grain on the sabbath?
The Pharisees accused the disciples of working on the sabbath as they were picking grain. Jesus then reminded them that even king David broke the law when he was in need by eating bread meant only for priests. He said ‘the sabbath was made for man, not man made for the sabbath’
What happened in the story of the man with he shrivelled hand?
Jesus cured a man who had a shrivelled hand in the synagogue on the sabbath but the Pharisees saw this as work. Jesus then asked them ‘which is lawful on the sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save a life or to kill?’. The Pharisees’ stubbornness distressed Jesus
What do the stories of picking grain and the healing of the shrivelled hand teach us?
That human need should come before religious laws and that preventing harm is always a good thing

Laws on food and washing that prevents anything unclean entering the body

A gift dedicated to God

Jesus argued that it’s not what enters a man that makes him unclean but what comes out of his heart that makes him unclean.
What happens in the story of Corban?
Jesus argued that Jews were more concerned with their own traditions than the word of God. He used the example of Corban. The priests allowed people to leave their parents in need which goes against the commandments in order to give money to the temple via Corban. They worshiped their oral law over gods written law.
What do the stories of Jesus’ conflict with the Jewish law teach modern day Christians?
That the basis for good community cohesion is putting others welfare before strict religious rules and teachings

A Jewish group who studied the law of Moses and who were dedicated to keeping the Jewish faith alive.
