Jesus In Conflict With Authority Flashcards
What did the chief priests think about Jesus?
They feared him and wanted him dead
What happened in the story of the triumphal entry?
When Jesus entered Jerusalem as a king. He was carried on the back of a colt while the people cried ‘hosanna!’ And ‘blessed is the coming of kingdom of our father David!’. Cloaks and palm branches were spread along the road for his horse to walk on
What happened in the story of the cleansing of the temple?
In the temple courtyard Jesus found a market with money changes. He got angry, overturned their tables and drove the traders out saying that they had turned his fathers house into a ‘den of robbers’
What happened in the story of the authority of Jesus questioned?
The chef priests and elders asked Jesus on who’s authority he was acting. He replied ‘answer me and I will tell you who’s authority. John’s baptism, was it from heaven or from men?’. Saying from heaven would have been admitting they were wrong about John, but saying ‘from men’ would anger the people who believed john was a prophet, so they could not answer.
What do the stories of Jesus’ entry, cleansing of the temple and Jesus’ authority questioned show us about Jesus?
Jesus was acting on authority greater than that of the priests of the temple because he is acting for God (although he never says this)
What happens in the story of marriage at the resurrection?
The Sadducees didn’t believe in resurrection and tried to catch Jesus out with an awkward question. They imagined a woman who had married each of 7 brothers in turn once the previous one had died. They asked who would her husband be at the resurrection and Jesus replied after the resurrection people would be like ‘angels in heaven’ so wouldn’t be married at all.
Why is the story of marriage at the resurrection significant for Christians?
It shows the idea of resurrection before Jesus which challenges the belief that life after death is dependent on belief in Jesus
What happened in the story of paying taxes?
When Jesus was asked to pay taxes to Caesar, he asked them to bring him a coin and tell him who’s face was on it. ‘“Caesar’s” they replied. Then Jesus said to them “give to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s”’
What does the passage of paying taxes teach Christians?
To keep matters of state and religion separate and that you should obey both state and religious rules
Who were the Sadducees?
A group of priests who ran the temple in Jerusalem. They believed in following the rules of the Torah and didn’t believe in the resurrection of the dead
