What belief is the Christian religion based on?
That Jesus led a normal human life as a teacher and healer and continues to have a unique authority from God.
What did the earliest followers of Jesus believe?
That he spoke and acted with the authority of God.
Why is it important that Jesus was able the heal diseases?
This is an authority given by God.
Explain the concept of the Trinity.
There is only one God who is indivisible but that oneness is understood in 3 persons.
What is the role of Jesus in the Trinity?
As God incarnate (made flesh) the man Jesus is God in human form, or God the Son.
What does the ‘Son of God’ mean?
Claiming not that the person concerned has a divine nature, but perhaps that as God’s representative, that person may be seen as having God’s authority.
Give a biblical example of when God called Jesus his son.
During his baptism a voice from heaven said ‘Thou art my beloved Son; with thee I am well pleased.’
How does Jesus seem to have a father-son relationship with God?
He has an intimate relationship with God, the same qualities and powers as his father, and he inherits everything that his father possesses.
Why does Jesus use the title ‘Son of Man’ to describe himself?
It emphasises his humanity.
To avoid explicit claims of divinity during his ministry.
What does ‘Son of Man’ mean to people who knew of him?
To those who knew his work and teaching, it would hint at his divine mission as a representative of God.
What does ‘Messianic Secret’ mean?
Those who most closely encountered Jesus could see that he was the Messiah but Jesus urged them to conceal this understanding.
What happened at the moment of Jesus’ death?
The centurion seems to have seen something godlike in Jesus which marked him out as more than a mere man.
What conclusion do most Christian theologians reach about Jesus?
That he was both fully divine and fully human.
What do Adoptionists believe about Jesus’ authority?
He acquired it from God when he was baptised
What does Arianism believe about Jesus?
He was created by God to fulfil a specific role and that the title ‘Son of God’ was an honour bestowed on him by God.
