Jekyll and Hyde quotes Flashcards
Utterson is described ‘lean, long, dusty, dreary yet somehow lovable’
juxtaposition shows
‘did you ever remark that door?’
said by Enfield
Hyde’s first description sees him described as a ‘damned juggernaut’ why?
the adjective ‘damned’ makes the reader think that he is evil as only the bad people go to hell and most people believed in hell when the book was set. the noun ‘Juggernaut’ is a tough armoured suit creating the image of an unrelenting soldier
‘as wild as harpies’
describes the women who wanted to attack hyde. Harpies are demonic creatures this shows that Stevenson was saying that Hyde was carrying the devil’s workout for him
Utterson is shocked by Jekyll’s will because
in the event of his death, all of his possessions belong to Mr Hyde
the letters after Jekyll’s name tell us that
Utterson thinks that Jekyll forged Hydes handwriting to cover for his escape and as they write in the same form
‘scientific balderdash’ and ‘too fanciful’
said by Lanyon to refer to Jekyll’s work shows a rift between the two on their disagreement on science in contrast to the strength of Lanyon and Utterson’s great friendship
Gaunt Street
ytywrwe
‘an impression of deformity without any nameable malformation’
said by Utterson repeated similar things said by Enfield and seems to show that Hyde of so deformed because he is pure evil and hate.
‘not all of these together could explain the hitherto unknown disgust loathing and fear’
rule of three used by Utterson just to emphasize how bad Hyde is
‘I read Satan’s signature upon a face’
said by Utterson shows that he thinks that Hyde is the human form of the devil and thinks he is purely evil
