What happens in Chapter 1?
Enfield discusses with Utterson how he saw Hyde trample over a girl, Hyde pays off the girl’s family with a check signed by Jekyll.
What happens in Chapter 2?
Utterson looks after Jekyll’s will which puts all his possessions in the hands on Hyde if he ever ‘disappears’. Utterson visits Lanyon - Lanyon says he has fallen out with Jekyll over his experimentation and doesn’t know of Hyde.
What happens in Chapter 3?
Utterson talks about the will with Jekyll, Jekyll refuses to talk about it saying Utterson doesn’t understand.
What happens in Chapter 4?
Hyde kills Sir Danvers Carew, Utterson takes the police to Hyde’s house to find no Hyde, They find half a cheque book and the other half of the stick used to kill the man.
What happens in Chapter 5?
Jekyll says how he isn’t in contact with Hyde anymore, Jekyll asks Utterson what to do about a letter Hyde sent to Jekyll about his escape fearing it may ruin his reputation.
What happens in Chapter 6?
Jekyll seems to be doing better after Hyde’s disappearance, Jekyll hosts a dinner party including Utterson and Lanyon but the next few times Utterson tries to visit after he is denied, Utterson visits Lanyon who isn’t doing well and later dies.
What happens in Chapter 7?
Utterson and Enfield are on one of their scheduled Sunday walks and pass by Jekyll’s lab, They talk to Jekyll from the window but soon after Jekyll rushes away.
What happens in Chapter 8?
Poole visits Utterson expressing his concerns about Jekyll and how there might have been some ‘foul play’, Utterson follows Poole to Jekyll’s laboratory, All the servants are worried but are relieved when they see Utterson, Poole and Utterson go to Jekyll’s study, A voice is heard saying he can’t leave the study - it is not Jekyll’s voice and Utterson recognises it as Hyde, They break down the door to find Hyde dead, They find Jekylls letter with a confession and a new will with Hyde’s name replaced with Utterson’s
What happens in Chapter 9?
Utterson reads the letter Lanyon told him to read once him and Jekyll were both dead, He confesses to watching Hyde transform back into Jekyll after Jekyll sent him a note asking him to carry out some instructions which were to make the potion for Hyde.
What happens in Chapter 10?
Utterson reads Jekyll’s confession letter about how he first transformed into Hyde using chemicals, He describes how he got joy from this but over time Jekyll started to lose control, Jekyll describes how he tried to control it by just being Jekyll for two months but eventually the urge became too much so he transformed into Hyde causing the death of Sir Danvers Carew, after this he tried locking himself away from everyone and commits suicide as he is stuck as Hyde.
