summarize chapter 1
- Utterson introduced
- Enfield and Utterson for their Sunday walk
- Enfield recounts the story of a mysterious door and tells story of Hyde trampling a little girl
- and how he got a cheque signed from inside the door
quotes about Mr Hyde that show deformity

- “like Satan”
quotes about Hyde showing he is sub-human
-“snarled aloud into a savage laugh”
-“shrank back with a hissing intake of breath”
-“it wasn’t like a man it was like some damned Juggernaut”
“something of slyish cast perhaps, but every mark of capacity and kindness”
-used to describe Utterson in ch4
-suffix slyish on the adjective slyish = a theme of uncertainty and reinforces the idea that the reader doesn’t fully understand Jekyll’s character yet
- slyish= Jekyll is living a façade and this incoherency presents him as untrustworthy.
- first description of Jekyll shows secrecy as there is a juxtaposition in his personality, he has a dual personality which proves he is hiding parts of him
“going pale to the very lips and a blackness about his eyes”
-description of Jekyll when Utterson mentions Hyde again in Ch4
- “blackness” = adjective symbolises darkness that Jekyll’s secrets are shrouded in which could foreshadows the possible, mysterious and dark elements of his secrets
- this reaction is straight after hearing Hyde’s name, this extreme reaction is physically written upon his face which emphasizes the degree at which he blanches, using phrase “to the very lips” to show every inch of colour in him has been lost
- this paired with the abstract noun “blackness” is symbolic of secrecy, furthermore this immediate response of his eyes physically blackening implies Jekyll is afraid and his eyes are dilating out of terror and shows Jekyll trying to hide within himself to disconnect Utterson and revealing the truth
context about Victorian reputations
- forced to uphold your reputation and the moral code of a Victorian Gentleman was extremely authoritarian
- anyone who went dared to deteriate from this would have been ostracised
- Stevenson wrote this “cautionary tale” to show how no one could let their feelings out, they had to keep their secrets and stay respectable to be accepted
why is Jekyll so secretive with Utterson
because of Victorian times
what does Utterson’s aptronym represent
-Gabriel = angelic with power to communicate to God, makes him seem more reliable and trustworthy as a character of the time
- Utterson = to speak = associates with revealing the truth - lawyer - needs to be trusted
