Q

” he carried a whip in his trotter”
-about Napoleon, at the end when pigs becoming human

A
  • noun “whip” shows viciousness of pigs as they arm and prepare themselves to strike the other animals, a whip is often symbolic of authority and punishment, they are often used to contain and discipline animals, this further embeds the idea that the pigs are becoming human as they are now even using man-made weapons to torture the animals. makes it seem like the pigs have forgotten that they were once animals in their situation and have now taken full embodiment of humans

Q

who is Benjamin in the allegory

A
  1. intelligentsia - intellectuals and academics who always criticise political systems but do nothing to change it
  2. Orwell himself - Benjamin always knows what’s going to happen, however Orwell speaks out against injustices, Orwell’s overwhelmingly cryptic portrayal of Benjamin indicates how many people judge instead of changing thing
both see what will happen, however Orwell chooses to do something, because Benjamin has similar beliefs - both believe anyone who is in power will use that to benefit themselves so they give up and they think is pointless to do anything to change as it will always be the same for everyone in power
  3. bystander - caring but doesn’t want to get involved or act
