Jealousy And Infidelity Flashcards
What did Buss say?
Males have strategies that have evolved for the purpose of keeping a mate. These include direct guarding and negative inducements in the form of violence or threats of violence
What did Davy and Wilson say?
Men have evolved several strategies to deter their female partners from committing adultery. These range from vigilance to violence but are all fuelled by male sexual jealousy, an adaptation that evolved to deal with the threat of paternal uncertainty
What is cuckoldry?
The reproducing cost that might be inflicted on a man as a result of his partner’s infidelity. The consequence of cuckoldry is that a man might unknowingly invest his resources in another man’s child
What did Shackleford do?
Used a survey method to test male retention strategies. Used 461 men and 560 women in the US. Male participants answered questions about their use of mate retention techniques and were assessed on how often they performed each of 26 different types of violent acts towards their partners. Females answered questions concerning their partners use of mate retention techniques and violence against them. Men’s use of direct guarding and negative inducements were positively correlated with their violence scores.
What did Dell say?
Concluded that sexual jealousy accounted for 17% of all cases of murder in the UK, with men being predominantly perpetrators and victims.
What did Takahashi do?
Showed that the neural response to imagined scenes of sexual infidelity and emotional jealous was different for man and women. Using brain imaging techniques, they discovered that men showed much greater activation in the amygdala and hypothalamus when presented with scenes depicting infidelity in their mate.
What did Edlund and Sagarin say?
Claim that our understanding of the relationship between sexual jealousy and aggression is limited. Research doesn’t tell us whether the perceived infidelity is initiated by the female partner or the male rival which moderates the jealous response. Nor does research tell us whether sex provokes a greater degree of jealousy than some other act
What did Camilleri find?
Sexual assault of a female by her male partner was directly linked with the perceived risk of her infidelity but this does not happen for females. This is significant because males not females are at risk of cuckoldry.
What did Burch and Gallup find?
The frequency of violent acts toward pregnant mares was roughly double that directed toward non-pregnant partners, with sexual jealousy characterising those men who committed violence against pregnant partners
What did Valladares find?
A Nicaraguan study which found that half of a sample of pregnant women physically abused by their partners suffered hits to the abdomen, designed to make abortion more likely
