1
Q

othello coming up with his plan (soliloquy)

“monstorous birth”

A

the end goal of iagos plan was always to take away othellos morality and humanity and replace it with rage and something inhumane

iagos danger is that he is able to do this by exploiting the purity that is love, and his ability to manipulate something that he can never understand

Q

iago about e.l. plan (soliloquy)

“into a jealousy so strong
that judgement cannot cure”

A

ironic from iago whose whole plan is based on his own occupational and hierarchical jealousy

even iago is blind to his own jealousy to a fault- becomes blind not to judgement as much as humanity

Q

iago to othello

“o, beware, my lord, of jealousy
it is the green-eyed monster, which doth mock the meat it feeds on. “

A

ironic use of “my lord”

“mock” attacking the ego and reputation - most important thing to a jacobean man, leading to the tragedy

“the meat” being eaten reflects the corrosive power of jealousy / male rage on identity - othello gets lost in the rage

jealousy being zoomorphised reflecting how it grows and becomes stronger, self destructive
