What were flappers?
Young women of the 1920s who rebelled against prewar standards of femininity, including wearing shorter dresses, bobbing their hair, dancing to jazz music, driving cars, smoking cigarettes, and indulging in illegal drinking and gambling.
What is jazz?
Music of African American origin characterized by improvisation, syncopation, and usually a regular or forceful rhythm, emerging at the beginning of the 20th century.
What was the Harlem Renaissance?
An African American literary and artistic movement of the 1920s centered in New York City’s Harlem neighborhood.
What was the Red Scare?
Fear among many Americans after World War I of Communists in particular and noncitizens in general, a reaction to the Russian revolution, mail bombs, strikes, and riots.
What is eugenics?
The study of the alleged mental and physical characteristics of different groups of people aiming to ‘improve’ the quality of the human race through selective breeding.
What was Prohibition?
In 1919, the U.S. Congress passed the 18th Amendment to the Constitution which banned the manufacture, sale, or distribution of alcohol.
What did the Twenty-first Amendment do?
The 21st Amendment repealed or did away with Prohibition.
What was the Scopes Trial?
The 1925 trial of John Scopes, a Tennessee teacher accused of violating state law prohibiting the teaching of the theory of evolution; it became a nationally celebrated confrontation between religious fundamentalism and civil liberties.
What was the Great Migration?
Large scale migration of southern Blacks during and after World War I to the North, where jobs had become available during the labor shortage of the war years.
What was the Teapot Dome Scandal?
A Harding administration scandal in which Secretary of the Interior Albert B. Fall profited from secret leasing to private oil companies of government oil reserves at Teapot Dome, Wyoming, and Elk Hills, California.
