jaw relationship in RPD Flashcards
when is jaw registration done
to mount primary cast and working cast
What are the stages of establishing jaw relationship
- to establish a vertical dimension
- to establish a reproducible horizontal relationship w mandible either CR position or RCP
What is the rest vertical dimension
vertical dimension when jaw is in rest position. Rest position It is the habitual postural position of the mandible when patient is resting comfortably and condyles are in a neutral unstrained position in the glenoid fossa
What are some factors affecting RVD
head posture, presence/ absence of teeth, body position, presence/absence of prosthesis, chronic neuromuscular disorder, drugs that have muscle relaxant effect, parafuctions like bruxism, age( due to alveolar growth)
What is occlusal vertical dimension
vertical dimension when teeth are fully intercuspated
How is RVD and OVD related
RVD - FWS= OVD
FWS is the space between upper and lower teeth when mandible is in resting position
what happens if excessive OVD is chosen
patient experience clicking during speech, trauma to denture bearing tissues ( alveolus and soft tissue), difficultly pronouncing P,B, M, strained appearance, TMD
What happens if inadequate OVD chosen
lack of facial support, reduced masticatory efficiency, cheek biting, dribbling saliva, angular cheilitis, TMD
