What does an aspiration type biosy tell regarding a cyst?
A
Gold fluid that reflects light when shone on inddicates an inflammatory cyst (cholesterol crystals)
White and thick - likely to be keratin indicating a keratocyst
Blood - vascular lesion e.g. haemangioma, aneurysmal bone cyst
Just air - maxilalry sinus or traumaticbone cyst
Negative pressure - solid (malignant or benign tumour)

What should be checked prior to diagnosing a jaw cysts?
A
1) Radiographs and other images
- most commonly with OPGs but CT and MRIs are useful
- ultrasound for soft tissue cysts
2) If proximity close to teeth, carry out pulp vitality testing
3) Aspiration-type biopsy
