JAW AND TEETH Flashcards
What are some functions of the mouth- not related to GI functions
Threat, carrying, vocalization
which tongue papillae is for taste?
fungiform
vallate
foliate
What are some functions of salivary glands?
mechanical breakdown of food protease- allows to taste food antibacterial lubrication
what protease is present in saliva that helps with breakdown of carbs
Ptyalin- alpha amylase- starts the carb digestion
what happens to saliva when para or sympathetic systems fire?
Parasympathetic- saliva production goes up
sympathetic -saliva production goes down
mastication equals the
physical processing of food
what does the masticatory apparatus include?
teeth- non GI function
jaw & jaw joints -support teeth and APPLY muscle force to teeth
muscles of mastication/jaw muscles- PROVIDE the force used for oral processing of food
what are the 3 mineralized tissues of the tooth?
Enamel
Dentine
Cement
ENAMEL
Acellular, cant be repaired on its own
formed by ameloblast
covers anatomical crown
Dentine
formed by odontoblast
~ 70-80 % hydroxyapatite
living tissue
Mineralized
Cement
mineralized cellular or acellular provides an attachment point for the periodontal ligament produced by cementoblast ~50-65% hydroxyapatite
nerves and vessels enter the pulp or tooth through the
root canal
pulp
where odontoblast live
contains vessels, nerves, CT, lymphatics
if the pulp dies then the tooth is dead
periodontal ligament
lies outside of the tooth
anchors down the tooth to the alveolus
supports tooth agasint bite force
gingiva
derived from oral mucosa
attached- to the jaw bone or cement tissue of the tooth
free- overlaps the crown and forms a gingival pocket
