What were the three major social classes?
Royal class, Noble class, Lower class.
Who was in the royal class?
Emperor, Royal Family, Royal Priests.
Who was in the noble class?
Shogun, Daimyo, Samurai.
Who was in the lower class?
Peasants, farmers, artisans, merchants
Who fell out of the Hierarchy?
Ainu, Eta (professions like butchers, executioners), Hinins (convicted criminals), Prostitutes.
What were women’s roles in Japan?
Born into a class, worked with their husbands, had more freedom in rural areas than those in the upper class, did not have legal existence.

What is social mobility?
Being able to move between classes.
Did Japan have social mobility?
Very limited, were often born into a class and stayed there.
