What kind of a society did the Japanese want to live in?
A society that embodied things they found important (peace, safety, harmony respect, everyone has a place, and that everyone has leisure time)
What was the cost to their peace?
rigid rules, no social mobility, were not encouraged to think for themselves, little personal freedom.
What held the economy back?
continued use of rice as currency, little foreign trade
What did they change the currency to?
They changed the currency from rice to coins.
How did they manage their resources?
Was the first society to learn how to scientifically replant seedlings, used forests to build buildings, heat homes, and cook food.
What is Kabuki theater?
A form of theater where men play both women and men, these performances are lavish and can get quite violent.
What is sumo wrestling?
Sumo wrestling is a form of wrestling that was originally done as a religious performance but became more for entertainment in Edo.
Poetry in Japan?
Haiku’s were the new form of poetry in the Edo period, these poems were about nature.
What is Bunraku?
A form of theater with large, nearly life sized, puppets.
