In 1941 an incident happened in Manchuria gave Japanese an opportunity.
What did Japan say China had done and what did they do about it
They claimed that Chinese soldiers had sabotaged the railway and in relation they overran Manchuria and set up a popper government in Manchuria
Why was Manchuria important
It was rich in resources such as food and raw materials and was also a market for Japanese exports and land for large population
What did China do about the invasion
China appealed to the league for hell but Japanese said it was invading an aggressor
Why couldnโt the league help China
- None of the European powers wanted to reduce trade with the Far East especially since USA couldโve taken over lost business
- The alternative of military sanctions was even less appealing as this would have involved European-powers sending naval task force to the other side of the world with very certain prospects of success
- both Britain and France losses colonies in the Far East including Hong Kong and Singapore and feared sanctions might provoke a Japanese attack
- they took long to produce Lytton report
- lack of will from the league
