Archipelago
A group or chain of islands
Mainland
An area or part of land that is located on a continent
Clan
A group of families that have a common ancestor and who’s ruler was a religious leader
Kami
A Japanese belief in forces or spirits of nature that clan chiefs descended from
Regent
A person who rules a country for someone who is unable to rule
Figurehead
A person who appears to rule even though the real power rests with someone else
Shogun
A powerful Japanese military leader who often had more power than the emperor
Feudalism
A system where landowners grant people land or rewards as a trade for military service or labor
Daimyo
A local landowning lord
Samurai
The samurai were trained professional warriors who usually came from noble families and wore light armor and fought with swords and bows
Bushido
The samurai code of rules meaning “the way of the warrior”.
Noh
A type of drama that included both music, movement and words appealing to noble classes and samurai
Kabuki
A form of drama that uses music and dance appealing to common and trades people
Shinto
Traditional religion of Japan with no scripture or permanent set of gods
Shrine
Places of worship, and for the Japanese, places where they felt the power of the Kami
