9th grade freshman class at a U.S. High school
What was the first group?
Strong fear appeal - emphasised poor dental hygiene and included direct statements such as ‘this could happen to you’.
What was the second group?
Moderate fear appeal - little info on the consequences of poor dental hygiene and comments are factual.
What was the third group?
Minimal fear arousal - neutral info on tooth growth and function.
What was the last (fourth) group?
The control group - lecture on the functions of the eye.
How many questionnaires were filled out by each participant?
Three
- -> 1 week before the lecture
- -> Immediately after the lecture-asked for emotional reactions to lecture.
- -> 1 week later
How many lecturers were there?
There was 1, they lectured for all the groups.
How long did the lecture last for?
15 minutes
What did the participants think of the strong appeal group?
Strong appeal was seen as more interesting, easy to follow but also higher levels of dislike.
What was the net increase in the moderate fear group?
22%
What was the net increase in conformity in the strong appeal group?
8% increase
What was the net increase in conformity in the minimal arousal group?
36% increase
What was the net increase in conformity in the control group?
