Define: Chronological age
the number of years a person has lived, Many consider that ‘old age’ starts at 65
Define: Psychological age
a frame of mind and behaviours associated with one’s age
Define: Social age
expectations of how we should act at a certain age and how we should interact with older and younger people
Define: Physical age
the physical changes that occur with age, Affects how we perceive ourselves and are treated by others (self-esteem), Some social scientists suggest that ‘old age’ begins when physical disability sets in
What is the retirement age in Canada? How has it changed over time, from the 70s?
1970s - early 1980s = 65
1987 = 60
2005 = 61 years
What are 3 Sources of Retirement ‘Income’ for Canadians?
- Government public pension (age 65); Guaranteed Income Supplement if individual has little or
no other retirement income - Canada Pension Plan/Quebec Pension Plan (CPP/QPP); Payments based on how much an individual contributed over her/his lifetime of working
- Private pensions and savings; Company pensions and RRSPs
