Divorce rate
a prediction of the proportion of couples that can be expected to divorce before their 30th anniversary, based on current patterns of divorce
poor man’s divorce
desertion in cases where couples could or would not go through the difficulty the government posed for divorce
What are the 3 legal grounds that the Divorce Act recognizes for divorce?
- cruelty, adultery, being separated for one year
- separation is main ground because proving cruelty or adultery can be time consuming and expensive
Define/explain: The 3 Crises of Divorce
- a transitional state of ‘disequilibrium’ - a temporary imbalance resulting from changes in relationships, routines, assumptions, and roles
-usually lasts 1-3 years
1 - Emotional Crisis
2 - Economic Crisis
3 - Parenting Crisis
Sole custody
one parent alone has custody (usually mom)
Split custody
One parent has custody over some of the children, other parent has custody over others
Shared custody
both parents have joint custody and each spends at least 40% of time with child (financial implications)
Joint custody
both parents have equal custody (more common)
