Georgia called on students to accept desegregation in 1961

James Meredith and Missiisippi Universities
-Mississippi Universities (Oxford, Mississippi).
-1962 attempts to desegregate universities
-riots outside uni, cameral man attacked
-one black student wanted to go to this university but riots broke out
-6,000 federal troops sent out
-greatest crisis the south had faced since civil war
James Meredith applies to Mississippi
Rejected by Mississippi university in 1961, reapplied in 1962 with NAACP arguing on his side that he was rejected for being black. Supreme court ordered the uni to admit him but it disobeyed by stopping him from entering
Barnett
(State govenor) and some of the uni officials were WCC menpmbers
Events of 30th September
Meredith went to register accompanied by approx 500 federal officers. They were attacked by a mob of 300, many armed
State police reaction to mob
State police did little to stop cars of men armed with bricks, firebombs and other misiles. Guns were fired and street lights were shot out.
Marshalls only had teargas.
JFK reaction to mob
Spoke on TV and radio calling for calm but he was ignored by the mob which continued and chanted in favour of Barnett
Consequences of mob
Two civilians died 245-375 injured. 160 federal marshalls injured, 28 of them shot.
Final Outcome
Kennedy sent 30,000 Federal troops who eventually stopped riots. Meredith registered 1st October, spent whole year guarded by troops
